2017: A Sound Odyssey
A journey through music that reinvigorated my love of finding something new.
2017: A Sound Odyssey
Last week I decided to publish a non-sports article to see what the reception was. The feedback I got was good so I have decided to do another one. This may not continue weekly but I will continue to publish blogs on subjects other than sport as and when it takes my fancy.
A few years ago I embarked on a challenge for myself in order to reinvigorate my love for music. I have always been a huge music fan but in recent years had found myself slipping away from engaging with anything new, and rather, just listening to the same old songs that I knew that I enjoyed over and over again. In the age of streaming where playlists of favourites can be created in minutes, this is an easy thing to do. However, I had always prided myself on discovering quality music to listen to and wanted to once again fall in love with great songwriting and musicianship.
The task was simple, or so it seemed. I would listen to an album in full from start to finish, without interruption, each day for a year. 365 albums over the course of a calendar year. There were no steadfast rules but, in order to attain some variety, I did say to myself that I didn’t wish to listen to more than two albums by the same artist over the course of the experiment (as you will see, this did change on occasion). They didn’t have to be albums that were new to me, or by artists that I hadn’t discovered before, although both of these would make up some of my listening, but rather I was just trying to get back the appreciation of listening to a body of work by performers in the way that it was initially intended.
I was also very keen, where possible, not to listen to greatest hits compilations by an artist as these didn’t give the impression that the artist had originally intended with an album release although, for various reasons, I did also break this rule on a couple of occasions.
In terms of where I would choose the albums that I was going to listen to from, well, there were loads of options. A quick internet search will easily provide you with lists of top rated and recommended albums in a huge variety of genres; each week new albums come out and lists of these are also readily available; almost everybody has a favourite group or album that they are willing to recommend; I myself generally keep an ongoing list of things that I want to listen to that I haven’t got around to yet or haven’t listened to for a while; and finally, there are loads of music stores that you can go into and browse what you think you may like to hear.
The beauty of technology today is also that, no matter what it is that takes your fancy, it is only a couple of clicks away. I am still a massive fan of owning original copies of music whether that be on vinyl or CD (I still use both) but I am also a premium member of Spotify and this would be essential to my cause here as it would be impossible to source every album that I wanted to listen to in a physical copy in time to keep to my deadlines.
So one cold January evening with the rain battering against my window, I grabbed my copy of Oasis’ The Masterplan and we were off. If you read my last music article, you will realise why it had to be Oasis to begin with but I chose this particular album because it is not full of all the obvious classics. It does, however, include many of my personal favourites including the title track, ‘Half the World Way’ and ‘Talk Tonight’. It was a good way to warm me up for what was to come.
Over the next week I dipped in and out of genres from The Cure to Moby to Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen and then went for Ready to Die by The Notorious B.I.G. I was familiar with Biggie’s more well-known tracks like ‘Juicy’ and ‘Big Poppa’ but I hadn’t heard much else so was pleased when other tracks stood up in terms of quality. ‘Gimme the Loot’ and ‘Suicidal Thoughts’ in particular stood out to me as great efforts and I started to get that feeling that I had been craving at the beginning of the project of immersing myself into something new to me. Following this, over time, I picked out some other rap albums to listen to that I had heard the hits from before but hadn’t actually consumed the whole piece. N.W.A’s Straight Outta Compton, Nas’s Illmatic and Jay-Z’s The Blueprint all lived up to expectations and over time led me to other areas of the Rap/Hip-Hop universe with albums from Outkast and Dizzee Rascal being some examples.
As the year progressed, I found that I would go through little phases when I found a genre or category that I liked and would listen to a bunch of albums of each area over a shorter period of time (although occasionally I tried to spread them out a bit further to keep up variety). There was the US punk phase where I listened to albums from the Descendents, The Offspring, Bad Religion and Green Day; the Americana phase where Jackson Browne, Ryan Adams, Gram Parsons and James Taylor took centre stage; the modern Scottish phase which included Biffy Clyro, Twin Atlantic, Frightened Rabbit and Glasvegas; the chill out phase with Royksopp, the Avalanches, Air and Portishead; and the female singer indie-rock phase which included Wolf Alice, Paramore and the Cranberries. There was no strict pattern, just one thing naturally leading to a curiosity to find another.
I made time for listening to older albums that had been recommended by friends of parents and people that I spoke to in the pub but had never actually sat down to listen to in full - Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake by the Small Faces, Odyssey and Oracle by the Zombies and Soul with a Capital S by the Tower of Power were particular highlights for me. It was lovely to sit back and imagine myself being transported back to when these albums were created and those that recommended them to me were listening to them for the first time.
Over the course of the year, I tried to listen to as many different genres as I could, incorporating rock, metal, punk, soul, dance, jazz, reggae, hip-hop and rap amongst others. I would always say that my tastes have been eclectic but this endeavour really allowed me to listen carefully to different styles and enjoy them for what they are.
As time went on, initially I thought I might struggle to continue to find new things to listen to but that never happened to be the case. I did listen to more than two albums by a number of great bands but that was more because I really wanted to listen to the different albums rather than because there wasn’t something else that I wanted to discover. For example, I did listen to five albums by The Beatles, but each one is an absolute classic in its own right and gave me an insight into their journey over the course of their career. The same can be said of Bob Dylan.
I was also introduced to true indie classics that I had neither really heard of before or hadn’t had the opportunity to listen to and albums such as Pavement’s Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain and In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel are now on regular rotation in my playlist.
There were also occasions where I couldn’t decide between two albums by a band so, if time allowed, I listened to both in one sitting. Frightened Rabbit were a band that I really enjoyed from the songs that I had heard but I couldn’t possibly decide which of their albums to prioritise so I listened to The Midnight Organ Fight followed by Pedestrian Verse one day and enjoyed every second of the experience. If you’re feeling like a bit of self-reflection and melodrama then give it a go.
My usual routine in the initial stages was to come home from work, have some food, and then listen to an album to unwind for an hour (or however long it lasted) before doing any other jobs that I needed to do. Over time this had to evolve as life changed for me and I had different things going on. That year in my life was one of transition as I had just moved back to Scotland from England and was trying to reconnect with old friends as well as meet new people. During the course of the project my life changed drastically but I still found time each day to listen to an album. Sometimes I did it before work while I was preparing in the morning. Others it was while I was out for a walk or a run. It didn’t matter to me, as long as I got it done. What it never became though was a chore. I really enjoyed it.
By the end of the year, I didn’t really want the challenge to end. I had most certainly achieved my goal of reinvigorating my love for music and my desire to find new things and I have continued to explore since. Whilst in the years preceding the project I didn’t often go looking for new things to listen to, now I make a point each month of seeing what has been released and listening to at least a few tracks from things that take my fancy, if not whole albums. I am absolutely delighted that this is the case, as, if I had not carried out the project, I may not have made time to discover bands such as IDLES, Fontaines DC and Blossoms or artists such as Michael Kiwanuka, Lizzo and Sam Fender, all of whom I now love.
I have also continued to go back and find things from the past that I might have missed previously. One of my favourite eras to return to has been the 80s, and listening to bands such as Big Audio Dynamite, Bronski Beat and A Flock of Seagulls, has made me further appreciate a decade where flamboyance and excess mixed with new ideas and pride in being different to an almost perfect degree.
One of the biggest joys that I have had in the last few years since the project was compiling the playlist for my own wedding. I took great joy in searching for songs that weren’t atypical of your normal wedding soundtrack and many people have commented that they enjoyed the music over the course of the day. I was particularly delighted when my bride to be agreed to walk down the aisle to an orchestral version of ‘Sally Cinnamon’ by the Stone Roses, as this remains my favourite song by them, and now I will always have a brilliant memory of it.
Music truly is the soundtrack to my life once again and I couldn’t be happier that I started the challenge when I did. If you’re ever feeling like you’re falling out of love with music or can’t find anything new, push your boundaries and see what’s out there. You won’t regret it.
